Dear Colleagues,
after the election of the members of the Management Board and the Project Boards by the Institute Assembly in April and the election of the chairs of the Project Boards in May, the new management of our Helmholtz Alliance is complete again. The new management would like to thank all former members of the boards for their dedicated work, which lead to the big success of our Alliance. Especially we would like to thank the former scientific coordinator Peter Mättig as well as Ian Brock who acted as the scientifc manager until February. Their dedication and continuous effort made our success possible.
This newsletter introduces the new members of the Management Board. Our colleagues Ties Behnke, Karsten Büßer, Eckhard Elsen, Joachim Mnich and Dieter Zeppenfeld will continue their involvement in the management of the Alliance.
The complete list of colleagues who are now contributing to the management can be found in the who-is-who on the terascale webpage.
Something different: Since we have been occasionally asked how to find out more detailed information about the Alliance, its programmes, its structures, decision making bodies etc. we would like to remind you that the central information hub is at www.terascale.de. Here you can get all information about the working groups, meetings, schools etc. In the "Internal"-Tab Alliance members can access all management information using the known Alliance password.
The next big event of the Helmholtz Alliance is the yearly meeting, which will take place in Dresden from December 1-3. You should have received the first announcement a few days ago, details will follow shortly. This and all other activities of the Alliance are listed in our calendar, which is directly accessible at www.terascale.de/calendar/.

- Alliance Calendar
Starting on March 1st I took over as the scientific manager of our Helmholtz Alliance from Ian Brock. I am currently professor for experimental physics at the University Wuppertal. After I obtained my PhD at the H1 experiment in 1992 from the University Hamburg I worked at the University of Arizona (SSC experiment GEM) and the University Mainz (experiments ALEPH and DZero) before starting my current position in Wuppertal. As a member of the ATLAS collaboration since 1997 I have been involved in the construction of the LAr calorimeter and upgrade activities. Most recently (2008) my group started in addition to contribute to the development of the hadronic calorimeter of the CALICE collaboration. An additional activity since 2003 is the development of a GRID infrastructure in Germany for HEP computing. This got me involved in our Helmholtz Alliance already at the early stage of the proposal. I have been a member of the GRID project board since the beginning of the Alliance.
Dear fellow Alliance members,
With effect from 8th February I serve as one of the two scientific coordinators of our Helmholtz Alliance (together with Ties Behnke). I am currently professor for experimental physics at Bonn University. My group is involved in ATLAS and in the development of gaseous detectors for a future linear collider and other applications.
I obtained my PhD in 1995 from Bonn University analysing the first data of the ZEUS experiment. Since then I have worked at CERN (OPAL), Hamburg University (TESLA, OPAL, H1) and Freiburg University (ATLAS, ILC).
The Helmholtz Alliance has been close to my heart starting at its early planning phase and I have been a member of the Management Board from its beginning. I am now looking forward to take over the coordinator job from Peter Mättig, whom I wish to thank for his excellent work. Our Alliance is now in full swing and we recently received excellent marks in the mid-term evaluation through a high-level international committee.
Of course - as often - nothing is perfect and we still have to work to further improve the availability and usefulness of our infrastructures (analysis centre, virtual detector lab, grid infrastructure) for all Alliance partners. Also, with the incoming data of the LHC experiments many of the Alliance elements will now have to show how effective they are. We will remain flexible and adjust our programme and structures based on new ideas and insights from all of you.
Klaus Desch
Professor for theoretical physics, Bonn University. Main research interests: Beyond the Standard Model. Have worked extensively on supersymmetry, and on Higgs physics phenomenology. Also interested in model building.
My main research interests are precision tests of the electro-weak theory and the search for new phenomena using rare decays of heavy mesons, in particular B-mesons. Currently, I am participating in two dedicated B-meson experiments, in the BABAR experiment at Stanford and in the LHCb experiment at CERN.
Before joining the Heidelberg University, I was working on the HERA-B experiment in Hamburg (1996-2001) and on the L3 experiment at CERN (1989-1996), where I also prepared my PhD thesis (Measurement of Z->µµ, 1994).
Ulrich Uwer,
Professor of Experimental Physics at the Heidelberg University since 2001.
Lutz Feld is a Professor at RWTH Aachen University. As a member of the CMS collaboration he works on silicon tracking detector R&D and on searches for new physics with a focus on supersymmetry. Formerly he was a member of the ZEUS, OPAL and ATLAS collaborations.
Since April I am chairing the GRID Project Board of the Helmholtz Alliance. I am employed by DESY. For the years 2007 to 2009 I was the Computing Coordinator for CMS, based at CERN. In the years 2001-2005 I was involved in the WLCG defining the project requirements with the LHC experiments and monitoring progress of the project and principal investigator of the German e-Science Grid Project for HEP. From 1998 -2002 I was leading the Fermilab Computing Division, a group of 250 people. I received my PhD from University of Mainz in 1988 measuring direct CP-violation in the Na31 experiment at CERN. In the following I worked on ALEPH at CERN and then ZEUS at DESY, taking responsibility for online data acquisition for the ALEPH TPC and offline computing in ZEUS. I gained many years of experience in the fields of analysis, online and offline computing at CERN, DESY and Fermilab.
In April 2010 I became member of the Management Board of the Helmholtz Alliance. I obtained my PhD at the University of Hamburg working on the CHARM neutrino experiment. Later I worked at CERN and became professor at Humboldt University, Berlin in 1994. Since 2001 I am professor at the RWTH Aachen. I have been member of the L3 collaboration at LEP for many years. In 1994 I joined the CMS experiment, where I worked on the muon chamber construction and now I focus on the data analysis, in particular the search for new physics. In addition I am involved in the DØ experiment at Tevatron and the Pierre Auger Observatory where I study cosmic rays at high energies.
Since October 2008 I am professor for physics at the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg. I obtained my Diploma (1996) and PhD degree (1999) at Bonn University working at the OPAL experiment at LEP on the field of tau lepton physics and Higgs boson searches, respectively. After two years as a research fellow at DESY in Hamburg working on R&D for a TPC at the ILC and sensitivity studies for Higgs bosons at ILC, I returned to Bonn as a “Hochschulassistent”. Since 2001 I am member of the ATLAS collaboration where my main interest is since then the investigation of electroweak symmetry breaking and the search for Higgs bosons. In 2006 I accepted the offer a for professorship at Siegen University, where I was continuing the ATLAS Higgs boson studies and R&D work for a TPC for the ILC within the LCTPC collaboration. After moving to Freiburg these activities have been continued and were broadened by signing responsible for the local TIER2-centre. Since the start of the Helmholtz Alliance I have been a member of the Analysis Project Board.
The first workshop of the SUSY/BSM Fit Working Group of the Helmholtz Alliance will take place from July 26 until July 28 at DESY. Registration is now open on https://indico.desy.de/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=3079. The agenda should only be considered as a rough guideline since discussions are supposed to constitute a substantial part of the event. Presentations of ideas serving as starting point for discussions are very welcome. Simply send a short message to wienemann@physik.uni-bonn.de.
The workshop fee is 30 € to cover the expenses of the dinner and coffee/tea. It needs to be paid cash at the beginning of the workshop.
Upcoming meetings, conferences, workshops. The complete calender can be found at www.terascale.de/calendar/.
