Dear fellow Alliance members,
while writing the foreword for this issue of our newsletter, I'm watching with one eye the “LHC Page 1” screen, as I often do these days. It is amazing to see that the LHC experiments have collected already more than 0.7 fb-1 this year, 20 times more than in 2010. The machine and the experiments are in full swing, and so are our Alliance activities to support the analysis and interpretation of the data. Everything is prepared for discovery – let's hope nature is kind enough to share a few more of its secrets with us soon.
With this first “full-sky survey” (as astronomers would say) of the Terascale landscape it is also a good time to analyse where we stand
in Terascale physics and where we would like to go. CERN council will update its European strategy for particle physics in a process which is starting this summer and will culminate in an updated strategy document by the end of 2012 – with the results from the first LHC running period in full view. This process will involve the views of our community – that's us. I would like to encourage especially the younger members of our community to participate in this effort with discussion, opinions, ideas. It's mainly your future after all. The Helmholtz Alliance is ready to serve as a platform within Germany for this process. As an example, our Linear Collider Forum is a nice opportunity to discuss status, ideas and views on the Linear Collider project as a part of this strategy. The next LC Forum will take place at MPI Munich on 14 and 15 July. More information about this event and all the other Alliance meetings is – as always – available from the calendar or the Schools and Workshop section on this website.
I hope to see all of you at the latest for our Annual Workshop in Bonn taking place in the famous Beethovenhalle from 7 to 9 December.
Till then I wish you happy and successful bump hunting,
Klaus Desch
