Dear Alliance Members,
our Helmholtz Alliance “Physics at the Terascale” is a 5-year project which will end in summer 2012. Given the strong determination of you, the Alliance members, and the excellent marks our Alliance achieved in its midterm evaluation and DESY´s “programme oriented funding” (POF) evaluation, it is only natural to look for possible ways to continue this unique cooperation of German research institutions after 2012.
We have been asked to provide a concept for such a continued cooperation by summer this year. Such a concept should build on the successful elements of the current Alliance, sustain the common infrastructures and – most importantly – bring in fresh ideas that account for the new scientific landscape: the LHC experiments are taking data ready to harvest many new, hopefully exciting physics results which will finally shed light on the Terascale.
The newly established “Portfolio Themes” of the Helmholtz Association looked like a promising source of funding, however it was not considered the right instrument by the Helmholtz centres. We are now looking intensively into alternative ways. The report mentioned above is an important step in this direction, to determine, what we really want and need, and to communicate this to Helmholtz. All research areas of the Alliance are organising workshops to discuss the future beyond 2012. The first, of the Analysis project, took place on 23 February with large attendance from all parts of Germany and good discussions. The others will follow shortly. Please consult the Alliance calendar on www.terascale.de for details. For these workshops, and for the process of shaping a future cooperation, we count on your input. Please contact the corresponding Project Board in order to feed your ideas into the discussion.
