Message from the Management

Dear colleagues,

our Alliance will continue for another 15 months until the end of 2012 and we have been already discussing for some time how we can continue the successful Alliance activities after 2012.

In a meeting with the Helmholtz Association in June, the state and the prospects of the Alliance have been discussed. Together with the management of the Helmholtz Association and of DESY we are looking into different options, but so far have no clear solution to offer.

As a very positive and promising move Prof. Mlynek, the president of the Helmholtz Association, offered to support the Alliance in the years 2013 and 2014 with limited funds in order to bridge the time between the end of the formal Alliance funding and the start of the new funding cycle in the Helmholtz Association in 2015. Together with the money which already has been pledged by DESY and by the universities, primarily through tenured positions, this will give us a chance to sustain some activities and keep the Alliance alive. We will need to work out more detailed plans for this over the coming months and will discuss these at the next annual meeting of the Alliance in December of this year.

Whether we will manage to secure more funding after 2014 is not clear at the moment, but we are confident that we have a good chance - based on the success of the Alliance so far - to convince the funding bodies to support us also after 2014.

Finally the Alliance yearly meeting is coming up. It is hosted this year by Bonn University. This meeting will be important to take stock of our activities and to plan for the future. The registration for the meeting is now open (www.terascale.de/alliance2011).
