Physics at the Terascale Helmholtz Gemeinschaft

MC-PAD / Helmholtz Alliance Training Events 2010

Scope

In January and March 2010, two combined MarieCurie / Helmholtz Alliance Training Events on "Detector simulation using Geant4 and data analysis with ROOT" will take place at DESY / Hamburg University. The training events are mainly geared towards Ph.D. students and young postdocs who are working on detector-related issues like tracking, aligment, calibration, energy scales, etc. Also young scientists working on detector development and interested to learn more about simulation and data analysis are addressed.
- The first event, which is restricted to young scientists proposed by the MarieCurie training Network MC-PAD (MarieCurie Particle Detectors), will take place from January 28-30. For details and the registration of this event, see the the connected INDICO page.
- The second event, set up for young scientists of the Helmholtz Alliance "Physics at the Terascale", is held from March 4-6. Details, registration etc. can again be found in INDICO.

Contents

The events will combine introductory lectures and hands-on experience on the following topics:
1. Simple fitting techniques using ROOT.
2. Monte Carlo methods and simple applications.
3. The physics of a beam telescope made of Si-strip detectors
4. Introduction to GEANT4 and simulation of a beam telescope made of high resolution silicon strip detectors – generate a set of simulated data for further analysis.
5. Analysis of the beam telescope data: clustering and position reconstruction, simple track fit, determination of position resolution and detection efficiency, effects of multiple scattering, track extrapolation errors and basic detector alignment.
6. Determination of the position resolution of a Si-strip detector as function of angle of incidence.
In order to profit from the training event, the participants are required to have a basic knowledge of ROOT and to be able to read and modify simple C++ code.
To check your knowledge please consult the prerequisites.

Organisational issues
  • Admission to the training events is by invitation only. Selection committees will choose from proposals by the group leaders of the MarieCurie network and the Helmholtz Alliance, respectively. After being invited please use the left link "Registration" to register at the registration pages.
  • Further organisation details can be found in the left navigation bar.
  • For further questions please don't hesitate to contact the organisers.
